      Weight loss statistics in London

      Weight loss in London

It seems London has a complicated relationship with weight. While it has the lowest obesity rate of any English region, it also saw the highest rate of weight gain in the UK in 2025, according to our partners at myBMI. Here's what that looks like in numbers:

      • 35% of Londoners (rising to 41% in Greater London) gained weight in the last 12 months
      • 24% lost weight
      • 50% of London adults describe themselves as overweight
      • just 46% say they're happy with their current weight

It's not just about how people look, though. It's also about how they feel. With half of London adults describing themselves as overweight, it's no surprise that 50% say losing weight is their goal for the next 12 months.

Social media and diet culture are playing a role too:

      • 61% of Londoners say social media has a negative impact on body image
      • 56% say that AI-altered images and filters make pressure around weight and body image worse
      • 54% feel that diet culture has become more harmful during their lifetime

      Weight loss injections in London

Attitudes towards weight loss injections in London are shifting, with 47% of Londoners viewing them as a valid medical tool. Awareness is growing, too. For example:

      • 51% are aware of how they work
      • 50% know the eligibility criteria
      • 56% are aware of the risks and side effects

That said, 39% still feel that using weight loss injections is cheating. But it isn’t! Weight loss injections are clinically approved treatments, prescribed and monitored by healthcare professionals, and are used alongside, not instead of, positive lifestyle changes. And the results speak for themselves.

In Greater London, just under 93% of people who used weight loss injections reported an improvement in their quality of life, according to a survey by online pharmacy Chemist4U.

When you lose weight, it can positively impact almost every part of your life. You'll likely find that being active is more comfortable, you're sleeping better, feeling more confident, and in a better headspace.

The numbers back that up. Among Londoners using weight loss injections:

      • 58% report improved personal confidence
      • 56% say their social life has improved
      • 56% see improvements in their mental health
      • 55% feel more confident at work
      • 53% feel more confident when dating
      • 57% report improved physical health

It can also lower your risk of obesity-related health conditions, or help improve those you already have. All of this adds up to a better quality of life, which is why the results are so encouraging.

Side effects of weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy are usually mild, and they tend to settle down as your body gets used to the treatment. They're also most common when you first start or increase your dose, and there's plenty you can do to manage them if they do crop up.

      Obesity statistics in London

London has the lowest obesity rate of any English region, with half of adults classed as overweight or obese, and only around 25% saying they're unhappy with their weight.

Londoners are also the most active in the UK, exercising an average of 5 hours a week.

But it's not all good news. Greater London saw the highest rate of weight gain of any UK region in 2025, with 41% of adults putting on weight.

Pressure on the NHS in London

The numbers make it clear that obesity is putting real pressure on the NHS.

According to data collected by Chemist4U, the NHS has spent over £20.7 million on bariatric ambulances in total (specialist ambulances built to safely transport people living with obesity), services, and equipment since 2020.

That's around £3.4 million a year, which is roughly the same as hiring 100 new nurses. And it's only going up, with spending rising by 123% between 2023 and 2024 alone.

Closer to home, the London Ambulance Service spent £1,162,537 on bariatric ambulances, services, and equipment between 2020 and 2025, making it the fifth highest spending NHS trust in the country. It's a significant sum, and it reflects the real and growing impact that obesity is having on NHS services right here in the capital.

Thankfully, treatments like Mounjaro and Wegovy are giving people more options than ever before to tackle obesity effectively. The more people who are able to manage their weight, the less pressure there'll be on NHS services like these in the future.

      London lifestyle statistics

London saw the highest rate of weight gain of any UK region in 2025. A big part of that is likely down to lifestyle.

41% of Londoners say easy access to takeaway and junk food negatively impacts their weight. And the rise of remote working hasn't helped either, with 26% reporting weight gain because of the shift.

It's a pattern that shows up in how Londoners approach eating, too. When it comes to managing weight, the top priorities are:

      • avoiding takeaways – 47%
      • reducing portion sizes – 36%
      • eating whole foods – 28%

But with 44% of Londoners saying they struggle to eat healthily while socialising, it's clear that good intentions don't always translate into easy choices.

Weight loss injections can help with this, as they work by regulating appetite hormones and slowing stomach emptying, which reduces cravings for calorie-dense, high-fat foods.

Londoners are already the most active in the UK, exercising an average of 5 hours a week, which isn't surprising given the number of parks, gyms, fitness classes, and running routes the city has to offer.

If you're already active, you've got one of the hardest parts of your weight loss journey sorted. Weight loss injections can work alongside that effort as a helping hand, enabling you to get more out of the work you're already putting in.

Research shows that the average weekly exercise increases from 4 hours to 5 hours after starting treatment. If you're already doing an average of 5 hours, imagine what that could rise to!
