What are Wegovy pills?

Wegovy pills are an oral version of semaglutide, the active ingredient found in Wegovy weight loss injections.

They're a once-daily tablet, rather than a once-weekly injection.

How does the Wegovy pill work?

Wegovy tablets contain the active ingredient semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Your body naturally produces the GLP-1 hormone, which is responsible for managing your blood sugar and regulating your appetite.

By mimicking the effects of GLP-1, clinical trials found that the tablets helped:

  • regulate blood sugar
  • reduce natural hunger levels
  • keep patients feeling full for longer

As a result, you may find it easier to eat less throughout the day, without feeling like you’re missing out. They work best, however, when used alongside other positive lifestyle changes, like changes to your diet and increased levels of physical activity.

How do they differ from Wegovy injections?

Wegovy tablets and Wegovy injections both contain the active ingredient semaglutide, so they work in much the same way.

However, Wegovy tablets reduce the need for needles, sharps bins and keeping the medicine refrigerated. However, unlike injections, Wegovy tablets need to be taken on an empty stomach, ideally after you’ve woken up in the morning.

Since Wegovy tablets have to survive the digestive system rather than going directly into the bloodstream like injections, they're combined with a carrier molecule that acts like a bodyguard to help the semaglutide reach your bloodstream.

This also means the doses are different for each treatment.

Overall, which one is best for you will depend on which method you find more convenient.

Wegovy tablets: clinical trial results

In late 2025, the OASIS 4 trial examined the effectiveness of oral semaglutide in adults who were overweight or obese. Importantly, adults with type 2 diabetes were excluded from this trial.

On average, participants lost 17% of their total body weight. That's a loss of around 40lbs from an average starting weight of 235lbs.

But in a more recent analysis of the same trial, early responders (those who lost more than 10% of their body weight by week 16) showed an average weight loss of 22% after 64 weeks.

However, it’s important to note that, since clinical trial results present an average amount of weight loss, it means some people in the trial lost less weight than average and some lost more. Your results will be unique to you.

To give you an idea of how this looked in different people:

  • 8 in 10 lost at least 5% of their body weight
  • 6 in 10 lost at least 10%
  • 5 in 10 lost at least 15%
  • 1 in 4 lost 20% or more

This means most participants lost at least 5% of their body weight, but some lost less than that.

Wegovy tablets dosages explained

Just like with Wegovy injections, the dose of Wegovy tablets is increased over time.

This process is known as titration. It means you’ll be given a low dose at the start of treatment, which will be increased depending on how well you tolerate the medicine and if you’re achieving the results you want. Both you and your clinician will need to agree it’s the right option before you increase your dose.

Wegovy tablets are available in the following doses:

  • 1.5mg
  • 4mg
  • 9mg
  • 25mg

Below is an example of a dosing schedule. You may not need to be prescribed the highest dose to achieve your weight loss goals.

Wegovy tablets eligibility

The eligibility criteria for Wegovy tablets follow the same guidelines as Wegovy injections.

You'll need one of the following to be eligible for a private Wegovy tablet prescription:

  • a BMI of 30 or above
  • a BMI of 27 or above, as well as a weight-related health condition, like type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol

Wegovy tablets availability

Wegovy tablets were launched in July 2026 and are available privately from GPhC-registered pharmacies following an online consultation.

To become available on the NHS, the treatment must be reviewed by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which will assess whether the treatment is cost-effective enough to recommend. Your local NHS services then need to decide whether to offer the treatment in your area.

How to take Wegovy tablets

The directions for use are as follows:

  • Take one tablet a day, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 120ml of plain water. Do not take it with sparkling water, coffee, juice, or anything other beverages other than plain water.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything other than water, or take any other medications.

Wegovy tablets side effects

As they contain the same active ingredient, side effects tend to be similar across Wegovy tablets and injections.

Importantly, not everybody experiences side effects. During clinical trials, those who experienced side effects usually found them to be mild and manageable. They’re most likely to occur when you first start treatment, but they tend go away on their own as your body gets used to the medication.

Common side effects may include:

  • nausea
  • constipation
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • changes in skin sensations
  • headache
  • tiredness
  • upset stomach
  • dizziness
  • bloating
  • belching
  • gas
  • heartburn
  • hair loss

When to seek medical help

Contact your GP or prescriber, or seek urgent medical help, if you experience any of the following:

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis): severe stomach pain that won't go away, with or without nausea or vomiting. The pain may also spread to your back.
  • Gallbladder problems (like gallstones): pain in your upper stomach, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or clay-coloured stools.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia): particularly if you also take insulin or sulfonylureas. Signs include dizziness, blurred vision, anxiety, sweating, slurred speech, shakiness, confusion, a fast heartbeat or feeling jittery.
  • Dehydration leading to kidney problems: if you have persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea, this can lead to dehydration which can affect your kidneys.
  • Severe stomach problems that won't go away.
  • Vision changes, especially if you have type 2 diabetes.
  • Increased heart rate: your heart feels like it's racing or pounding for several minutes, even when you’re resting.

Wegovy can also cause a severe allergic reaction. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of the following:

  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • severe rash or itching
  • fainting
  • a very rapid heartbeat

Warnings

Wegovy isn’t suitable for everyone. Tell your prescriber if you:

  • have or have had problems with your pancreas or kidneys
  • have type 2 diabetes with a history of diabetic retinopathy
  • are due to have surgery or a procedure involving anaesthesia
  • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
  • are taking any other medications, including vitamins and supplements (Wegovy can affect how some medications work and vice versa)

Do not take Wegovy if you:

  • are allergic to semaglutide
  • or a close family member has ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a type of thyroid cancer
  • have multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • are under the age of 18

Storage information

Keep dry and out of direct sunlight.

Alternatives to Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets may not be the right fit for you. If this is the case, there are plenty of alternatives:

  • Wegovy injections: an injectable version of semaglutide, injected once a week
  • Mounjaro injections: another once-weekly injection containing tirzepatide, which mimics two appetite-related hormones, GLP-1 and GIP
